ARS Research Methodologies Workshops - These 2 day workshops aim to fulfil the RCoA requirements for research competencies for trainees, but are suitable for clinicians of all grades interested in any aspect of research in anaesthesia or related topics. They are usually scheduled to run in parallel with the corresponding ARS meetings. The tutors for the workshops are drawn from the past and current ARS Council, all of whom are experienced researchers and teachers. Numbers are deliberately restricted to 24 per workshop.
The workshop will be useful for anaesthetists of any grade who are already involved in research or those who are about to embark on a research project. Post FRCA Specialist Registrars and Lecturers will find this meeting to be particularly appropriate to their needs since knowledge of research methodology is one of the non-clinical topics which form an important part of Post FRCA training. Even if actual research is not undertaken it is considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports in the literature.
Teaching sessions will address: developing a research idea; study design; project management; analysis; presentation and interpretation of data; dissemination of results.
Group sessions will allow participants to: provide criticism of a published research paper; design a clinical trial; detect common pitfalls in analysis and interpretation of data.
Day 1:
Devoted to tutorial teaching on a variety of subjects including: * How to develop a research idea * Study design * Practical aspects of clinical trials * Ethics, COREC & research governance * Presentation skills * How to get published. Practical sessions include literature appraisal and study design. Informal advice is available from the tutors throughout the course.
